Artist Statement
My practice incorporates different strands of media such as painting, drawing, photography and silkscreen printing. The works have evolved from processes of continual exploration and engagement with subjects such as living organisms and natural phenomenon, as well as hyper-realities found in simulations and simulacrum.
I am interested in a range of writers and influential thinkers including Edward Osborne Wilson’s writings on Biophilia (based on hypothesis) and John Gray’s heretic political philosophies based on progress and other illusions.
My most recent drawings have involved a painstaking process of filling in with graphite, pencil drawings taken from my own photography. The consistent rhythm and technique forms shimmering surfaces that mimic mechanical reproductions. These surfaces show traces of the time and thinking involved throughout the rigorous and meditative process.
My interest in mechanical reproduction led me to experiment using the drawings as platforms for silkscreen printing. I was interested in the risk factor of this technique as the drawing is subjected to potential destruction in the screen-printing process if ‘mis(s)-registered’. This involves an emotional un-attachment to my renderings as well as drawing attention to the fragility of the object itself and my relationship with it.
